The Most Interesting Photography Links of The Week 001
Welcome to the first installment of my favourite photography links from the week. As you can imagine, I spend a lot of time looking at photography related links on the internet, so the plan is to collect my favourite every week and put them all in a single handy post for you on a Sunday. What do you think? Leave a comment if you think I should keep it up.
The Next 5D on March 2, 2012 [CR3]
I’ve been excited about this news for over a year now, because that’s how long I’ve been waiting for this news. Rumour after rumour, I’ve been telling myself that any day now, the new Canon 5D Mk3 was going to be released, and it wasn’t worth buying a Mk2. Truth is that it would have been worth it, because I’ve waited far too long for this, but it would appear that the time has finally come. Exciting times are ahead, and to quote CanonRumors, here are the specs:
Specs
- 22mp
- 61pt AF
- 100% VF
- 3.2″ LCD
- Dual CF/SD Card Slots
- Price: Around $3500 USD
- Announcement on March 2, 2012 (Depending where you are on earth)
Case Study: Standing Up for your Pricing
This is a really interesting article about a photographer’s struggle to deal with people low balling his price structure. If you’re a photographer, you’ll be familiar with the scenario, and if not, then Doug Strickland has shared the entire email conversation with us.
“It isn’t always easy to stand up for your pricing as a freelance photographer, but it is important if you want to stay in business. The photographer who takes jobs at a loss isn’t going to be around for very long or is eventually going to have to take a full time job doing something else to make ends meet. As freelancers, it is important to learn how to stand up for making a living wage.”
Rant: I Love Photography
This fun-loving article is a refreshing take on photography as a whole. Recognising there is a percentage of photographers who hate photography, Allen takes it upon himself to explain why it is that he loves photography. The photography ranges from the highest standard that is seen around the world, to the basic snaps taken on a Blackberry. Read the article, it’s really rather interesting.
PocketWizard Plus III’s: More Trigger, Less Cash
PocketWizard have just updated their triggers, and the good news is that not only are they better, they’re cheaper too! The number of available channels have jumped from 4 to 32, with four zones per channel, which is a much needed addition – I know a lot of photographers who complain about other photographers setting of their flashes. The full article will provide you with a lot more information, but needless to say, it’s got a lot of people very excited. I personally can’t seem myself changing from using my Phottix Odin, but we’ll have to see.
Behind The Scenes With Sports Illustrated
This is a really interesting look at what it takes to be a sports photographer these days, courtesy of the excellent team at F-Stoppers. This is one of my favourite photography websites because they make excellent videos so check them out. This particular video looks at the work of the Sports Illustrated 5-photographer team as they take on BCS National Championship, showing you how they work, on their own and together. There’s also an article that goes with the video too, which covers some of the gear that they use.
Flickr Is Getting a Major Makeover
It seems that a lot of photography websites are taking on a bit of a makeover at the moment, and Flickr is certainly one of the biggest, with the biggest changes. To quote BetaBeat:
“Mr. Spiering moused over the current photo view. “This is very typical of Flickr,” he said. ”Lots of white space, small photos, lots of information around.”
He then opened a new tab to show the spread, completely revamped. Suddenly the photos look more than four times their current size and lie neatly justified on the page, somehow jigsawing together without cropping or changing the order in which they appear.”

Use A Rubber Band For Smooth Panning Shots
Trust DIY Photography to provide us with a video like this. I’ll make this short because the video and post is short. It’s a way of creating a panning effect with a video camera, without having to spend more than a couple cent. Why didn’t I think of this?!
Photography Discussion – Can you make it as a Photographer Today?
This link comes from Jared Polin at FroKnowsPhoto, and you may well have heard from him before, even if it was just from my list of top 20 photography websites. He makes a lot of videos, and helps a lot of people out, and in this video, he tackles a very important question. How easy is it to make it as a photographer today? He provides some really insightful information, so be sure to check it out.
Know Your Rights with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, The Gregory Brothers and the ACLU!
This final link comes from Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock From the Sun, Inception) of all people, and it’s a video on knowing your rights when it comes to photography. It’s a fun little animation/song, which clearly helps you to understand your rights when it comes to photography. It’s your job to know them, or they will be taken away from you and there’s nothing that you can do about it. The police have gotten worse recently with stopping photographers and videographers, so it’s important to know when the police can’t take your camera way from you. Here it is:

February 26, 2012

Absolutely. I love this kind of summary. I enjoy reading a lot of posts online as well but it’s sometimes hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Our favorite links lined up pretty well this week. Thanks Josh!
Great idea for an post, a lot of great articles, some of which i’d seen already but that doesnt detract from how good they are i suppose! love this idea, definitely a keeper.
This is great – I don’t have time to get around all I’d like, so a weekly round up is most welcome. Please keep it going
Two head is better than on, I don’t have the means to search for this links myself, so please keep it coming.
